Upon creating a new SharePoint 2010 web application (on Windows 7 x64) and using the claims based authentication model you can receive a 500 error from IIS, stopping you dead.
Turns out it's a known issue, just install the hotfix: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=166231 and reboot (yay, rebooting your server)
